If you would like to be a potential resident you can refer yourself or be referred by other agencies e.g. Probation Service, your local Council or a worker in the prison.. The first step is usually a phone call or email to the house to find out if there is an empty bed. As we do not keep a waiting list we usually send emails to the agencies we work with if there is a vacancy coming up. After we receive basic information and if we think the man being referred may fit in, we will invite him to come for an interview. Or if he's still in prison, we may go and visit him there. Each person is considered individually, so we will ask about his support needs, hopes and plans for the future, and give him the chance to ask questions. We talk about the regime of the houses and if he feels this might be something he can fit in with.
Our expectations include that residents are prepared to work with us and to be committed to making any necessary changes in their lives. We don't accept men who are simply looking for accommodation and nothing more.
If it is felt that we could work together, a place will be offered and a move in date agreed. Initial paperwork and planning can then take place so that his particular needs are worked with, either with his Genesis key worker or with other relevant professionals. Many of our residents hope to move on and secure their own tenancy, but whatever their goal, assuming that they live within our rules, they can stay at Genesis for up to 2 years before moving on to live more independently.
We can continue to offer informal support to ex-residents if they request it.
